What an amazing afternoon! 2020 MDI High School Graduation... the weather held off although it rained all around us, as evidenced by showers and wet roads on my way home. The ceremony went without a hitch, people got in, parked their cars, and celebrated with horns blowing and cheers of joy!
Jen and I have made a couple of trips into the grocery supermarket for food over the last month, taking all the precautions suggested by our Maine CDC experts, and have made cloth masks to wear.
I noticed, only because I was looking for some chocolate ice cream to go with the birthday blueberry pie that my "Hunny Bunny" has promised to make for me, that the ice cream freezer shelves were almost empty.

Realizing in advance that it is all about "comfort food" at this time, Jen was inspired to make a big batch of cookies Saturday. It looks like we will have some sweet treats for a while, if I don't "overindulge". Yes, they taste as good as they look, and those are gallon bags!aht.tchrhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17732087606479471606noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6365898670376201766.post-23552996653293819312020-04-01T19:37:00.003-04:002020-04-01T19:37:48.218-04:00Virtual Connections

Being home is not the worst thing in the world, but there is a sense of loss within me by the isolation from other family, specifically my sons and families. If it weren't for the fact that a virtual connection through FaceTime and our electronic devices allows us to actually see and talk in real time, I think this separation would have worse effects for both my wife Jennifer and I.
Yesterday, as we "got out" for a ride in the car, we received a video call from our youngest grandson, who really does miss us and our bi-weekly visits, and he was dressed in a Halloween costume! He made us laugh, expressed joy in seeing us, and asked if he could FaceTime us every day. A no brainer for Jennifer and I, we are now looking forward to his calls.Charlie Johnsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02857178842544200022noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6365898670376201766.post-42005268325877298232019-09-11T11:45:00.004-04:002019-09-11T11:46:20.408-04:00Mondays...

The second week of school begins, but at least we were able to be there and share!
I like both the depth in the spacing of the figures and the balance of the various sizes of the figures in this image. I did crop it to improve composition!
Yesterday when I got home, I thought I would go down front and take some photos on the shore, but before I could get down there or even get out of the house, I was attracted to the afternoon light shining in through the living room windows. The geometry of the shapes of light on the floor and furniture were striking to me as they set up an interesting contrast in the bottom section of the image.Charlie Johnsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02857178842544200022noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6365898670376201766.post-41619052467668653792018-04-23T15:00:00.000-04:002018-04-25T09:49:22.316-04:00Black and White Shore
I like the idea of making black and white images, and it is through the editing abilities of the "Photos" app that an amazing amount of control over image and properties can be used. I used the control sliders to make this image lighter and a bit more "contrasty" to add some drama to the scene, which was shot in the early afternoon.Charlie Johnsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02857178842544200022noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6365898670376201766.post-57200642687958769692018-04-03T16:30:00.000-04:002018-04-11T08:01:23.969-04:00Right in the Room Backgrounds are a key to successful images, and I found this one right in the classroom. There was no snow falling in that first one, but this one features the large flakes making a pattern across the entire frame. There is a sense of light on the snow laden branches that gives this image a strong sense of three dimensional form.Charlie Johnsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02857178842544200022noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6365898670376201766.post-53230292986312194142017-09-21T12:18:00.000-04:002017-09-21T12:18:02.018-04:00Haystack SBL 2017Amazing that after helping to start the SBL program back in the 80's, that I would have a chance to bring students from my school to this amazing site to learn. Three days of more than eight hours in the studio helps students to realize what an intensive learning experience working in the Haystack studios can be. Even though I have worked in and on the campus dozens of times, each studio session is a magical experience. Here's the mosaic that i did this past few days!
Here they are "hamming" it up for the camera, which they are very aware makes for a more interesting picture. Shooting with the sun at their back is one of those "no-no's" I'm always telling students is a rule. But as with any "arts" rules, sometimes it is the breaking of those rules that gets you the images that are "creative" (unusual and purposeful). In this case, for me, the glow from the sun over their heads is the key to constructing meaning in this shot. I have several possibilities in mind, but won't take the time to elaborate these here, but rather let anyone that's viewing create their own "content".

I always am telling students to "push" for the shot that is not only unusual, but that also tells a story. I think I discovered that with this set of exploration shots from the "macro" viewpoint.

As a viewer, I will leave it up to you to decide if the last one is actually the better of the three. Here are some criteria for you to consider: composition, originality, and subjective (content) interest.
